Buying pipe is one of the most confusing tasks for beginners. Take a tape measure to a "2-inch pipe" and you'll find it measures neither 2 inches inside nor outside. This guide explains the "Schedule" system.

Quick Answer (TL;DR)

  • Nominal Pipe Size (NPS): The name of the pipe (e.g., "2 inch"). It stays constant.
  • Outer Diameter (OD): ALWAYS the same for a given NPS, regardless of schedule. (So fittings fit).
  • Schedule (Sch): Determines the Wall Thickness.
    • Sch 40: Standard wall. Used for home plumbing/water.
    • Sch 80: Extra thick wall. Used for high pressure or chemical safety.
  • The Catch: Since OD is fixed, Sch 80 has a smaller ID (Inside Diameter) (less flow).

The "2-Inch Pipe" Mystery

Let's look at a 2-inch Steel Pipe:

  • Outer Diameter: 2.375" (Fixed).
  • Schedule 40 ID: 2.067" (Roughly 2 inches).
  • Schedule 80 ID: 1.939" (Less than 2 inches).

Historical Note: Originally, wall thicknesses were standardized so that the "Standard" pipe had an ID almost exactly matching the name. As steel got stronger, walls got thinner, but the OD had to stay the same to fit existing threads/flanges. So the ID "grew" away from the name.

Schedule 40 (Standard)

  • Color: Usually White (PVC) or Black (Steel).
  • Pressure: Moderate. (e.g., 2" PVC breaks at ~890 PSI, rated for ~280 PSI).
  • Use: Residential water lines, irrigation, drainage, gas lines (steel).
  • Pros: Cheaper, lighter, more flow capacity (larger ID).

Schedule 80 (Extra Heavy)

  • Color: Usually Dark Gray (PVC).
  • Pressure: High. (e.g., 2" PVC breaks at ~1600 PSI, rated for ~400 PSI).
  • Use: Industrial chemical lines, high-pressure discharge, exposed locations (impact resistance).
  • Pros: Stronger, safer.
  • Cons: More expensive, heavier, restricted flow.

Compatibility Warning

Can I mix Sch 40 and Sch 80?

  • Yes, the Fittings fit! A 2" Sch 40 Cap fits a 2" Sch 80 Pipe because the OD is identical.
  • BUT: Be careful with glue/welding procedures. The ID mismatch creates a "step" inside the pipe which causes turbulence.

How to measure unknown pipe

If you find a random pipe and want to replace it:

  1. Measure OD: This tells you the "NPS Name" (Use a chart).
    • OD 0.840" -> 1/2" Pipe
    • OD 1.050" -> 3/4" Pipe
    • OD 1.315" -> 1" Pipe
  2. Look at the End:
    • Thin wall? Likely Sch 40.
    • Thick wall (nearly double)? Likely Sch 80.
  3. Read the Print: The vast majority of pipes have the Schedule printed on the side.

Metric Equivalent: DN (Diameter Nominal)

In Europe/ISO, NPS is replaced by DN (mm).

  • 1" NPS = DN 25
  • 2" NPS = DN 50
  • 4" NPS = DN 100

Conclusion

  • Building a house or sprinkler system? Use Schedule 40.
  • Building a high-pressure pump manifold? Use Schedule 80.
